The Power of Community

Belonging is a fundamental part of being human, we need people and it's amazing that this need is hardwired into our brains. Here at The Circle we believe in the power of community, of belonging to a group of like-minded people. We have experienced first hand how community has the power to inspire, support, connect, and heal.

During the year plus of being mostly separated from community has taught many of us the importance, physically and mentally, of being part of a community.

"A true community is not just about being geographically close to someone or part of the same social web network. It's about feeling connected and responsible for what happens. Humanity is our ultimate community, and everyone plays a crucial role." - Yehuda Berg

Belonging is one of the most important aspects of ones wellbeing and happiness.

Jeanine Stewart, senior consultant with the Neuroleadership Institute says,

“Being surrounded by other human beings doesn’t guarantee a sense of belonging. Belonging actually has to do with identification as a member of a group and the higher quality interactions which come from that. It’s the interactions over time which are supportive of us as full, authentic human beings.”

Being connected and above and beyond that, engaged with others in relationships and a sense in which you feel connected with activity, tradition and the group itself is vital.

A study published in PlosOne found belonging was more than just about having friends. Group membership was also important, and it contributed to self-esteem. Jolanda Jetten, the lead researcher says, "Groups often have rich value and belief systems, and when we identify with groups, these can provide a lens through which we see the world.”

The Circle of Thread Yoga Community's mission is centered around honoring the wisdom traditions of yoga, Ayurveda, and mindfulness while celebrating and supporting the power belonging, collaborating, and community.
